If you have achieved massive weight loss, whether by bariatric surgery or a program of diet regulation and exercise, you deserve congratulations. You have completed the first important step to drastically improving your health and transforming your whole life. We hope that you are already starting to enjoy some of the benefits, such as wearing smaller clothes sizes and engaging in a more active lifestyle.
Whether you realize it or not, extreme weight loss (100 pounds or more) also comes with some unwanted side effects. It is quite common for the elation you feel after successful weight loss to quickly turn into disappointment once you realize your skin no longer “fits” your new, trimmer body. You may require extensive plastic surgery in order to restore a more normal body contour.
After extreme weight loss, you will most likely experience excessive sagging and loose skin, most notably in the:
- Upper arms
At Grossman Plastic Surgery, we can perform a variety of procedures to restore the shape, tone, and elasticity of your skin following massive weight loss. You can receive individualized treatment recommendations by speaking to Dr. Grossman, Dr. Capraro and Dr. Baker in person. Please call 303-320-5566 today to schedule a consultation at our Denver office.

Am I a Candidate for Surgery after Weight Loss?
Weight loss is a critical first step to improving your health. Body contouring through plastic surgery is an important second step to alleviate physical discomfort, reduce embarrassment, and improve self esteem.
You are an ideal candidate for surgery after weight loss if:
- You are in good general health
- Your weight has stabilized
- It has been one to two years since your bariatric surgery
- You have realistic expectations for the outcome of your surgery
It is important to understand that your skin tone and elasticity has been compromised due to your weight loss. While plastic surgery can greatly improve sagging skin and stretch marks, it may not be able to eliminate these issues entirely.
Surgical Procedures to Improve your Appearance after Weight Loss
Grossman Plastic Surgery offers a variety of procedures to address loose and sagging skin following weight loss. Our surgeons will recommend one or more of the following procedures based on your unique body characteristics and aesthetic goals:
Unfortunately, massive weight loss often leaves behind large amounts of excess skin. This additional hanging skin in your abdominal region can have serious affects on your daily life, including:
- Hindering hygiene
- Stress on your back
- Developing rashes, skin ulcers, and odor
- Requiring excessively large clothing to fit and hide the laxity
At Grossman Plastic Surgery, we can perform a panniculectomy (removal of the hanging tummy flap) or a belt lipectomy to remove the excess skin left over from your massive weight loss.
A panniculectomy removes the apron of skin and remaining fat of the abdomen after extreme weight loss. This skin often hangs down over the bikini line and may cover and hide the pubic region. The procedure will alleviate physical discomforts caused by skin irritations and ulcers, and it will enable you to exercise more freely.
Ideal candidates should be in good general health and have maintained a stable weight for at least one year. Women should finish having children before undergoing this procedure.
Our Denver plastic surgeons perform this surgery under general anesthesia, and an overnight stay is required. The procedure should take between two and five hours to complete.
An incision is made across the abdominal area just below the bikini line. Overhanging skin and fat is removed, and the remaining skin is pulled tight and sutured together. Unlike a tummy tuck, your panniculectomy will not tighten abdominal muscles. The procedure just removes excess fat and skin.
After surgery, you will experience swelling, bruising, soreness, and pain for several weeks. You will need to wear a protective garment to facilitate healing. Light activities can be resumed in two to four weeks, but you should wait four to six weeks before engaging in strenuous activity.
Watch the amazing transformation of a panniculectomy patient after receiving treatment performed by Dr. Capraro:
A belt lipectomy is an excellent procedure for patients who have achieved massive weight loss because it circumferentially addresses multiple areas of the mid-section in one surgery. This procedure is similar to a lower body lift. However, in the belt lipectomy, our surgeons do not lift the tissue in the buttocks and thigh regions.
Your belt lipectomy procedure is performed under general anesthesia and will take five to seven hours to complete. You will need to spend one to two nights in the hospital following your surgery. An incision is made completely around the lower waist – similar to a thong bikini line with a slight V-shape above the buttock crease. Excess skin and fat is removed from the abdomen, hips, and above the buttocks.
After surgery, you may experience pain, bruising, swelling, soreness, and numbness around the incision for several weeks. It will take about three to five weeks before you can resume light activities. Strenuous activity can be resumed in six to seven weeks. Depending on the type of work that you do, you probably can return to work in around two weeks.
Lower Body Lift
A lower body lift resculpts the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks to provide you with a dramatic transformation in your mid and lower body. Dr. Grossman, Dr. Capraro and Dr. Baker will customize your lower body lift procedure to address your unique needs and aesthetic goals.
A circumferential incision is made completely around the lower waist similar to a thong bikini line with a slight V-shape above the buttock crease. Excess skin and fat is removed from the abdomen, hips, and above the buttocks. Sagging tissue is lifted, tightened, and excised, resulting in a smoother appearance. Your abdominal muscles are then reconstructed and tightened. Often, our surgeons will perform liposuction on the outer thighs and other areas for enhanced results.
A lower body lift is a very extensive procedure and can take anywhere from three to seven hours to complete. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and an overnight stay of one or more days is required.
Recovery takes a considerable amount of time, and you may experience some discomfort. You are encouraged to walk right away, and you can resume light activities after about three weeks. You should be able to return to work at this time; however, it will be about six weeks before you can engage in strenuous activities.
Dr. Grossman, Dr. Capraro, and Dr. Baker will monitor your progress during regular post-surgical check-ups, providing you with advice on proper exercise, diet, and activity regimens to facilitate your recovery.
