Otoplasty is a procedure that reshapes large or protruding ears. Our Denver plastic surgeons at can reduce the size of your ears or set them back so that they are in better proportion with the rest of your head.
Am I a Candidate for Otoplasty?
While you can have ear reshaping surgery performed well into adulthood, the majority of otoplasty patients are children between the ages of 4 and 14. Children with large ears are often subject to merciless teasing at the hands of their peers, resulting in embarrassment and reduced self-esteem. By opting for otoplasty, you can prevent your child from experiencing this harsh teasing throughout childhood.
The Otoplasty Procedure
Our Denver plastic surgeons perform ear reshaping using local anesthesia with a sedative or several anesthetics for adults and general anesthesia for children. Depending on the extent of the procedure, the surgery may last anywhere between one and two hours.
Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will make an incision behind the ear to access the cartilage. The cartilage is then reshaped and properly and symmetrically repositioned.
There are different techniques which can be used to reshape your ears. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will recommend the appropriate method based on your unique physical characteristics and aesthetic goals.
Recovery and Follow-Up Care
The recovery period for otoplasty is relatively short, and the results are noticeable almost immediately. You or your child will need to wear post-operative bandages for a short period of time following surgery.
Our team will give you detailed instructions to follow to ensure proper healing. It may take up to six weeks to fully heal, but you will be able to resume normal activity within a few days. Children may need to wait a week before returning to school.
