The procedure is called  labiaplasty or labia minora reduction. Labiaplasty has recently been getting a great deal of interest.  Women have become more aware of genital appearance because of pictures on the internet, in magazines, television shows, and in movies.  The media exposure has given women the opportunity to explore surgery that can correct a problem that rarely spoken about and that may have caused them embarrassment or damaged their self-esteem.

Enlarged labia can be congenital, meaning women are born with the condition, or it can be acquired.  Aging, childbirth and hormone use are some of the reasons it can develop later in life. Labiaplasty is an aesthetic procedure for the most part, but it can also correct functional problems like physical discomfort during sexual intercourse or when wearing certain types of clothing.   Enlarged labia can have a psychological effect if women become self-conscious and withdrawn because of the appearance of their genitalia and enlarged labia.

Labiaplasty is customized in each patient’s case.  Labiaplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia, but may also be done under local or IV with sedation. Incisions are made to remove excess tissue or to correct uneven labia during labia plasty surgery. There is usually no overnight stay and recovery takes about ten days.  There is minimal discomfort with having a labiaplasty procedure done.  Labiaplasty typically does not affect sexual sensation.
