This is a question that every woman must answer for herself. Many women find that they want to restore the appearance of their breasts after undergoing a mastectomy and other women choose to delay breast reconstruction or not undergo it at all. Factors you may want to consider in making your decision include:
- Whether you prefer the convenience of an implant or a prosthesis (an artificial breast shape that you can wear)
- Whether you are comfortable both physically and emotionally “going flat” or would rather restore the look of your breasts
- Whether it’s important to you to undergo your mastectomy and breast reconstruction at the same time or give yourself time after the mastectomy
- Whether cost is an issue for you – for women with health insurance that covers mastectomies, insurance should also cover breast reconstruction
It’s important to understand your choices so that you can make an informed decision about what is right for you. Along with speaking with your doctors and your plastic surgeon about procedure options, it is also a good idea to talk to women who have been through the same surgeries. Breastcancer.org has some great discussion boards where you can hear the stories of other women and contribute your own.
