May 27 has been declared “Don’t Fry Day” by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention in order to bring awareness to sun safety as many Americans kick off the summer season this Memorial Day weekend.
With more time spent outdoors over the summer comes an increased risk for ultraviolet (UV) damage to the skin. These simple tips can help you keep your skin safe from sun damage:
- Apply sunscreen before you go outside (use broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher)
- Wear clothing that acts as a protective barrier between you and the sun, like wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and longer sleeves and skirts or pants
- Seek out the shade whenever you can to give your skin a rest from the sun’s harmful rays
If you cannot imagine summer without sun-kissed skin, keep your eye on scientific advances, such as the recently identified molecules that activate cellular receptors to induce skin tanning or lightening without UV exposure. Topical creams based on this research may be the bronzing creams of the future. Of course, clinical studies must be completed to confirm the safety of these creams before they are available on the market.
